Gratitude for your Attitude
Sometimes to have an attitude of gratitude you must first have gratitude for an attitude.
This is especially true when you have a toddler in their “terrible twos”.
So, this is to my daughter:
I can’t count how many times:
I have to answer the question, “Why?”
But I am grateful for your inquisitiveness.
I play doctor or house with you.
But I am grateful for your imagination.
You tell me “I do myself, don’t touch”.
But I am grateful for your independence.
I must dance to Baby Shark.
But I am grateful for the joy it brings.

I listen to the alphabet song.
But I am grateful to hear you recite them.
You have colored/painted your body/ the wall rather than the paper.
But I am grateful for your creativity.
You ask me, “What is that?”
But I am grateful for your desire to learn.
You throw a tantrum over something silly.
But I am grateful for your adamancy.
I have to ask you to repeat yourself so that I can figure out what you are saying
But I am grateful for your patience.

You tell me everything is, “Mine!”
But I am grateful for your passion.
I tell you “no” but you keep asking until I say “yes”.
But I am grateful for your persistence.
Because when the day is over,
And you fall asleep,
I miss it.
I miss it all.
I want to answer more of your questions and watch your mind work.
I want to play another game and see how you perceive life.
I want to do another dance and see you smile.
I want to watch you put your shoes on the wrong feet because you did it yourself.
I want to hear the ABC’s again in your sweet voice.
I want to watch you turn from mad about something silly to being silly in a two second time span.
I want you to do it all.
Because, at the end of the day,
I have nothing but gratitude for your attitude.

This is so beautifully written. For every situation there is indeed something to be grateful for.

I love this! Mine is growing out of this terrible phase, but I have to say the threes were way worse than the twos! lol – I’m glad you have such a good outlook though! It’s so necessary!
