Snowball Cookies Recipe

This snowball cookies recipe is one of those treasured passed down recipes that will forever live in the heart and souls of those that make and eat these traditional cookies. This recipe has been in my family for generations and is still my absolute favorite Christmas cookie recipe!

Now that I have kids, I am excited to keep the tradition alive! I am teaching my 4 year old this year how to make these family favorites! What kid doesn’t LOVE a cookie COVERED in SUGAR?!

So…how do you make this snowball cookies recipe?

Let’s start with what you will need…

Equipment needed for snowball cookies:

  • large mixing bowl
  • 2 Baking sheets

Yes! That’s really all you need because you are mixing this dough with…YOUR HANDS!

Shopping list for this snowball cookies recipe:

  • 1 c All-purpose flour 
  • 1.5 c Walnuts 
  • 2 tbsp Granulated sugar
  • 1.5 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1 stick Salted butter 
  • 1 c Powdered sugar

Directions for this traditional Christmas cookie recipe:

  1. Mix all dry ingredients (flour, walnuts and sugar) in mixing bowl.
  2. Add vanilla and cut butter into dry mixture.
  3. With clean hands, mix all ingredients together until it looks like a course meal.
  4. Pop the bowl in the fridge for 30 minutes.
  5. While dough is chilling, prepared two baking sheets with parchment paper or non-stick spray and preheat oven to 300F.
  6. Roll dough into walnut sized balls and place at least an inch apart on prepared sheets.
  7. Bake in preheated oven for 35 minutes without opening.
  8. When cookies are cool enough to touch, roll each one in powdered sugar and place on a cooling rack.
  9. Once completely cool, dust or roll in powdered sugar again.
  10. Store in an airtight container.

A. Absolutely!  One of the most popular substitutes are pecans.  Just make sure nuts are crushed to a small size.

Q2.  Can I use unsalted butter?

A.  Yes!  You can always add a pinch of salt when using unsalted butter for the flavor.  If trying to avoid salt then omission is fine as well!

A.  Sure!  Just substitute King Arthur’s 1:1 GF all-purpose flour.
