How to Make Epic Stovetop Popcorn
Movie night or not, popcorn is my number one, all-time favorite snack. My daughter and I eat popcorn practically every night. I also bring it to social gatherings like book club. I CANNOT count how many times people have asked me to bring it with me or ask me how I make it. So I decided to let the “popcorn out of the bag”! This is no microwave popcorn. This is stovetop popcorn. The way popcorn was meant to be made! This is the too good to be true, old-fashioned, make your next family movie night that much more epic kind of popcorn!
What makes popcorn so great?
- Popcorn is delicious! I challenge you to stop eating it after making it this way!
- It is budget friendly. (Related post: Be Boujie on a Budget) All you need is kernels, oil and salt!
- It is whole grain, meaning it contains fiber and protein. Fiber helps with digestion and keeps you full longer.
- Popcorn is low calorie AND low fat.
- Several B Vitamins are also found in popcorn that can help to increase energy levels as well as naturally ease depression.
- It supports a healthy immune system and is even linked to potentially killing certain kinds of tumor cells!
- Did I mention that it is delicious???
My love for popcorn started when I was a little girl. My Dad would always make popcorn. We even made up names for the popcorn “parts”. We called the round parts “bumbles” and the parts that hang off of the bumble were “flaggels”. There was even a process that we had to eating our popcorn in which we would eat the flaggels off and save the bumbles until the very end and then eat them. I still eat popcorn like this today. My daughter doesn’t even call it popcorn. She calls it bumbles! That is how obsessed I am with popcorn!

Stovetop popcorn is BY FAR the clear winner.
Cooking it on the stove is tastier, keeps better and is better for you then other methods. And after 30 years experience making popcorn almost every night, I have finally mastered the perfect popcorn.
Epic Stovetop Popcorn
Equipment
- 6QT thin, sturdy pot with lid
Ingredients
- 1 c popcorn kernels white or yellow
- 1/4 c Avacado Oil or other high-temp cooking oil
- salt to taste
Instructions
- Heat the oil over medium-high heat. Put 2 kernels of popcorn into the pan, cover, and wait to hear them both pop. Remove the pan from the heat and add in the remaining kernels, cover, and let sit for 45 seconds.
- Return the pot to the stove's medium-high heat. The popcorn should start popping within a minute or two. Shake the pot every now and again to ensure even heating.
- Remove lid once kernels stop hitting the lid (this means there is enough popcorn in the pot so the kernels on bottom won't pop out). This will allow air to come into the pot and reduce the moisture level resulting in crisper popcorn.
- Remove the pan from the heat once the popping slows to a near stop. Let it sit for another minute to make sure you don't have popcorn explosion in your kitchen when remaining kernels at the bottom pop.
- Pour into a large serving bowl.
- Sprinkle with salt if desired. Enjoy!
- Try to stop eating it (Ha!)
