What Does a Stay at Home Mom Do???
There is a stigma around the title, ‘stay at home mom’. Admittedly, I too, use to be one of those people that asked the question, “What does a stay at home mom do?” Growing up I was taught that you get a job as soon as you can, work all your life and then retire. I just couldn’t rap my head around not working. So I assumed that stay at home moms just didn’t want to work, couldn’t work for some reason, or didn’t have to work. I basically assumed that they were lazy…
Boy was I wrong!!
I was initially forced to be a SAHM when I was laid off from my job in March 2020 due to COVID. However, after falling in love with being home with daughter all day and then finding out we were about to adopt again, my husband and I started to talk. We looked at our finances and deducted the expenses of travel and childcare vs. what I brought home in terms of income and realized that it wasn’t actually that much. It definitely wasn’t enough to justify the time away from my daughter. So we made the decision that I would remain a SAHM.
I had NO idea how much WORK being a stay at mom would be!
As a SAHM you are basically:
- A babysitter/nanny
- A housekeeper (which is mostly a never ending game of pick-it-up…AGAIN)
- A chef (to the PICKIEST eaters…)
- A taxi driver
- A personal assistant (to your spouse and kids)
- A nurse
- A delivery person (as in: you now do all the shopping)
- A teacher (of ALL subjects)
- An event planner
- An activity coordinator (which, by the way, was the job that I was laid-off from)
That’s 10 different jobs! So you are basically a master juggler…HA another job!

Thinking about the future I also see a promotion in my role of SAHM!
As my girls get older I see: PTA meetings, school functions/fundraisers/volunteer work, sports/dance and all they entail, etc… MORE JOBS! All stay at homes do is WORK…24/7/365.
So to the question, “What does a stay at home mom do??” The answer is…EVERYTHING!
So let’s drop the stigma around the role of ‘stay at home mom’.
Heck… let’s scratch the term in its entirety.
I’m not a ‘stay at home mom’ anymore…

I am not yet married and reading your post makes me relate to my friends and colleagues who have married already. Some friends say being a stay at home mom is much difficult that working and having someone to take care of the kids.

I’ve been a stay at home mom, and YES, it’s a ton of work that often goes completely unnoticed, or unappreciated. But it’s SO important. I’ve been grateful to be able to do it and also recognize that it really isn’t a job every mom was meant to do. It takes a certain personality and mine happened to align with the position.

I am not a mommy yet a house wife for sure and am always busy😕! I was never interested in doing typical 9-5 jobs to be honest 😜. My previous media job was tiresome but I absolutely loved it (especially the noon/odd shifts 😄). My bestie is a SAHM and she is such a busy woman! Loved the post 🙂

I was fortunate to be able to stay home with my 5 kids and I loved it. However, I fully support my daughter-in-law’s choice to work after the birth of her daughter.

I enjoyed staying at home but as you said, the job is everything. It is excessive sometimes but cannot replace the love you share with your kids.
